Katie Fogarty

Pics from The Fashion Spot

Fogarty may have been discovered outside of a Hollister at the West County Mall, but the models.com Top 10 Newcomer has surely moved on to lusher frocks –- in particular, Balenciaga and Miu Miu, in light of currently co-starring in both campaigns. Armed with a Fall 2009 showcard lensed by "it" fashion/portrait photographer Cameron Krone, that quietly radiates a romantic, wholesome nostalgia, coupled with last season's famed Spring 2009 début (garnering unrivaled attention in Europe subsequent to her "notorious spill" as a sought-after Prada exclusive in Miuccia's notoriously tortuous "shoes") and her current crop of recently released visionary editorials, all bets are on Katie for a killer sophomore season. I recently caught up with the 5'10" stunner amidst the pre-Fashion Week insanity and its fabled multifarious appointments, fittings, castings, and go-sees for a quick chit-chat touching on cereal, Cinderella, cookies, and capes – specifically, Batman's cape.
Do you ever become homesick while traveling? Do you bring any mementos or keepsakes from home with you?
I don't necessarily miss the city I am from so much as the people that are in it. I miss my friends, family and golden retrievers. Nevertheless my mom always manages to sneak a little something into my already overstuffed suitcase!
What is the greatest number of castings/go-sees that you have undertaken in one day?
Seventeen... I'm new: better to start out with just a few and work up to the big time!
Any fun pre-Fashion Week anecdotes or stories thus far?
Well, today I was in the elevator getting my heels out [of my bag] when I noticed that I had brought two different shoes! Fortunately I found a match buried down in the depths of my purse.
What is the most stressful aspect of castings? And the best part?
The most stressful part is without a doubt simply arriving there on time! The best is seeing all of my friends and having the opportunity to meet some really interesting people.
What makes you laugh uncontrollably?
That 70's Show and much more... life is to short not to laugh!
When did you first know that you wanted to be a model?
Probably when I was six years old while dressing up my Barbies.
Your recently released Aitken Jolly and Paul Sutch editorials have garnered rave reviews; how do you personally communicate the photographer's vision through the images?
When working with great photographers like Aitken Jolly and Paulo Sutch my job is quite easy; they tell me the general idea of what they want and I start from there!
What are your hobbies or otherwise hidden talents that may surprise people?
I absolutely LOVE baking and cooking.
While traveling abroad, what do you like to do in new cities?
Besides sleeping, I like to try new and weird food. Walking around the city is always fun and gratifying because it gives me a chance of what the place is actually like outside of the la-la land that is the modeling world.
How would you describe your personal style?
Simple, chic, easy... with a little edge.
Who are your fictional heroes?
Batman: who wouldn't want to fight crime – with an awesome cape?
What are your last thoughts prior to stepping out onto the runway?
Hail Mary, hail Mary...
Which (current or former) model do you think has the fiercest runway strut?
I have no clue; everyone walks in their own unique way so it's hard to decide.
What is your most prized value in others?
Loyalty: I need to know I can trust my friends and count on them when I need them.
What is your most prized value in yourself?
Confidence: then again, could I really do this job without it?
What do you consider to be your "big break"?
Tough question... I suppose the most likely candidate would be walking Prada S/S 09. Although I view my career as developing in steps rather than one giant leap.
Do you believe in luck?
Timing and luck are what brought me to where I am... along with a little determination and hard work.
What have you learned about yourself through modeling?
I learned that I can let things go. I am the type of person that once I release my emotions, I am fine. What will be, will be!
How do you keep yourself entertained backstage?
Talking to my friends and occasionally doing some homework; always having a good time regardless!
How do you maintain your radiant complexion? Do you have a specific beauty ritual?
Well thank you! All I do is wash my face twice a day. Thank you parents!
What is your favorite meal of the day? How would you rate your cooking ability?
Well my favorite to eat is breakfast: cereal, fruit and coffee! And my favorite meal to cook is dinner; since for me, chopping releases stress. I would say that my cooking ability is a 7 out of 10. I get the job done.
Are there any organizations or foundations that are particularly close to your heart?
Susan G. Komen for Breast Cancer research: my mom had it when she was 26!
What do you consider to be the most widespread misconception about models?
That we are all divas. I have met some of the coolest girls through this business.
How do you think the election of Obama will be translated on the runways?
Rather than the designers playing safe by presenting classics, I think the runways will show more innovation... and "funkiness."
What is your favorite fairy tale, and why?
Cinderella, on account of the fact that she worked hard for her entire life and never had any luck. That is until her perseverance paid off when all her dreams came true!
Do you ascribe to a particular life philosophy?
One of my favorite sayings to live by is: "it is what it is."
